Va. Man Drives Rental Car through State College Garage Gate

Fraser Street garage

no description

A 34-year-old from McLean, Va., has admitted to driving a rented Toyota through a State College parking-garage gate, a borough police report shows.

Shortly after 3 a.m. Tuesday, according to the report, Robert M. Tallent drove his rented Corolla through an exit gate at the Fraser Street garage.

That parking garage, a public facility on the 100 block of South Fraser Street, is owned by the borough.

Tallent told police that he had attempted three times — unsuccessfully — to insert his parking ticket into a ticket-taking machine, trying to get the gate to move, the report shows.

When it didn’t work, he told police, he drove through, anyway.

‘He admitted it was not a smart decision,’ the report reads.

Tallent told police that he didn’t think anyone would be around to help him — and that he didn’t think he did any damage to the gate, either, according to the report.

An investigation appears to be ongoing. The mishap left a large scratch on the Toyota and some damage in the parking garage, the report shows.

Tallent has said he’s willing to pay the full cost of any necessary repairs, police noted.

A message left at the borough parking office was not immediately answered late Wednesday.
