Alica Kelsey - "Through the Surface"

The works in this show all arose from a single place, yet are created with diverse materials. I’ve sketched and painted at this central Pennsylvania pond for more than a decade, magnetized with a sense of belonging and much to discover. In annual pilgrimages here as spring takes off, I find an ‘aliveness’ in so many aspects- astonishing color, graceful lines, rhythms of large patterns and small details- that it’s hard to know where to begin, or take any one piece of it to place on paper or canvas. There’s something beyond physical beauty which I experience here which urges me with deep stirrings to create. Perhaps this charge arises in paradoxes: of feeling like I’m coming home by being transiently entirely lost; of being incapable yet compelled to give vision to my experiences with pigment and gesture; of feeling small yet part of all that is there.
During the past year, I’ve been eagerly exploring and harnessing the expressive powers of different art materials to create a series of works based on my experiences at the pond. Inklings of “I wonder if…” have blossomed in to “oh….look what that did!” in the works which emerged. Yearning to get at the spirit of this place, I created works in a variety of techniques (painting, drawing, and printmaking) and media (oil, pastel, gouache, monotype inks, silverpoint, acrylic, pen, and graphite). I also drew and painted upon several different grounds and supports (linen, canvas, wood panel, and several kinds of paper), and with assorted painting mediums. I’ve been so excited to interact with different working traits of artist’s materials- texture, opacity, gloss, and more – to unleash color and strokes from tubes and sticks and bottles, and build surfaces which resonate with aspects of this place. Creating with a rich array of materials to express what I see on and beyond the pond’s surface has transformed my art-making itself; making this series of works has indeed been a journey “Through the Surface”.
It is immensely gratifying to me to bring this series of works together in a solo exhibition at the Bellefonte Art Museum. I hope that the chorus of varied media and materials offers viewers a visual harmony of sense of place- both the tangible and ‘something more’.
