FREE soybean cyst nematode (SCN) soil testing for soybean growers

Get your soil probes and shovels out and help PennState Extension, the SCN Coalition and the PA Soybean Board track the tiny, silent yet ferocious and fast reproducing soybean pest that was found in PA in 2002.
What is Soybean Cyst Nematode (SCN)? It is the most damaging soybean pathogen in the United States. SCN impairs water and nutrient uptake by the root, reduces the number of nitrogen-fixing nodules, and causes plant yellowing and stunting. The nematode may be present in a soybean field without causing any symptoms, already reducing soybean yield by 10 %, and going unnoticed for several years. When symptoms are visible, yield losses may reach 50 %. The best way to manage any pest starts by correctly identifying it! Therefore, a free nematode testing program will be offered thanks to the collective effort of Penn State Extension, the SCN Coalition (www.thescncoalition.com), and the PA Soybean Board.

How can you get a free SCN test? Request a nematode soil sample bag at your local Penn State Cooperative Extension Office. The soil bags contain sampling instructions, and field history form that must be returned along with the soil sample to your local Penn State Cooperative Extension Office within 3 days of sampling. There is a limited number of bags per county, so hurry up!

When: May 15th through June 20th, 2019

Where can you pick up soil sample bags?: Soil sample bags are available to pick up at your local Penn State Cooperative Extension Office: 420 Holmes Street, Willowbank Building Room 322, Bellefonte, PA 16823, phone number 814-355-4897

Cost: FREE

Sampling tips: Soil samples for nematodes can be collected with a soil probe, a spade or a hand trowel at 8 inches deep. Sample fields that will be planted with soybeans or where soybeans have been grown in the past. In a field where soybeans were grown last year, take the samples from within the row, in the root zone, where chances of finding cysts are highest.
