The Playhouse at McConnellstown to Present “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever”

The holidays are almost upon us, and in the traditional spirit of the season, The Playhouse at McConnellstown will present the festive comedy “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” written by Barbara Robinson. The show opens on Friday, November 17th.

Robinson’s “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” is based on her novel of the same name and presents a widely beloved holiday tale that is warm, incredibly funny, and full of characters both relatable and utterly unique.

Beth Bradley’s church presents a Christmas pageant every year, and it has become a bit too predictable -- the angel choir wears too much lipstick, the shepherds are all in their fathers’ bathrobes, and the minister’s grandson is permanently cast in the role of Joseph -- hardly “four-star entertainment.” But when seasoned and authoritative pageant director Mrs. Armstrong breaks her leg, it is up to Beth’s inexperienced mother Grace to step in.

The timing couldn’t be worse as the rambunctious Herdman children, a rough and tough group of siblings from the wrong side of the tracks, descend upon the pageant lured by the promise of free dessert at Sunday school and determined to win all the lead roles for themselves.

The Ladies’ Aid Society members are beside themselves with disapproval: All the shepherds quit because Gladys Herdman “hits too hard;” the show is briefly re-titled “Revenge at Bethlehem;” and the church catches on fire. Still, Beth and her community watch in surprise as the same old Christmas story is rejuvenated by the creativity, energy, and unexpected sincerity of a misunderstood young family.

“The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" is a timeless holiday story about the true meaning of Christmas (surprisingly) shown to us by the town’s worst-behaved children, the Herdmans. This is a funny and heartwarming way to start your holiday season!” exclaimed the show’s director, Jennifer Powell. “We have a wonderful cast this year, and they are really bringing the story to life. You do not want to miss this one.”

The Bradley Family includes Michael Cantrell, Sophia Wood, Cheryl Booher, and Terry Ayers. The Herdman children include Simone Bilich, Bryant Cassatt, Adelyn Frazier Yoder, Anna Kuntz, Iris Seguin, and Michael Swan.

Other children in the cast include Addisyn Bracco, Lyndsi Bracco, Madison Carns, Malia Carns, Morgan Carns, Laura Colvin, Gabe Donahue, Amiyah Humphrey, Sarah Kuntz, Jazmyne Lauver, Samantha Robinson, Brianna Sipes, Christian Sipes, and Catherine Weld.

The rest of the cast include John Catanese II, Joe Krabill, Karen Kuntz, Merritt Leidy, Jackie Myers, Wayne Querry, Stephanie Swan, Kyle Williams, and Chris Wirt.

“Anyone who has ever been ‘roped into’ volunteering to help with a children’s play will appreciate this show. You will be touched one minute and laughing the next,” commented cast member Wirt.

“We have a great cast, wonderful kids, and a fantastic crew. I recommend making reservations now,” added cast member Williams.

Jennifer Powell directs this production, and Hunter “Radar” McVey is the stage manager. The stage crew includes Kathryn Colvin, Caleb Donahue, and Lily Wise. Jeanne Nagurny costumes the show with sound design by Rick Brown. Set design is by Don Dietz and Jennifer Powell. Lighting is designed by Keith Sutton with technical production by Barbara Hughes.
