The band creates an energized show, spanning from slow blues/jazz numbers to all-out funk grooves. Acoustic Brew 20th Anniversary Concert
|
|
In honor of our 20th anniversary, Acoustic Brew is proud to host a free afternoon and evening of great local music. The afternoon will begin with a showcase of artists including Andy Tolins, Pure Cane Sugar, Chicken Tractor, Tussey Mountain Moonshiners, and many others. Stay tuned for more information and the final lineup.
Combining tradition with innovation, encompassing genres from Klezmer to Appalachian, Simple Gifts creates some of the finest arrangements in folk music today: swing fiddle creeps into a Romanian dance, spoons show up in an Irish reel, and the concertina ventures far beyond styles considered traditional for that instrument. Linda Littleton, Rachel Hall, and Karen Hirshon (this show will feature the duo of Karen and Linda) switch with ease among two violins, concertina, mandolin, banjolin, recorders, bowed psaltery, hammered dulcimer, baritone fiddle, guitar, piano, and percussion.
Tickets will be required for the evening show. Tickets are available online at http://acousticbrew.org or at Nature's Pantry in State College. All daytime concerts are open admission.

The children personify the resilience and promise of Africa’s next generation as they promote awareness of Uganda’s dual crises of AIDS and civil war. Spirit of Uganda, with Artistic Director Peter Kasule as master of ceremonies, celebrates cultural roots and contemporary creations with standing drums, dramatic choreography, layered rhythms, and call-and-response vocals. “Whatever these performers do, in whatever different bright attire, they do with discipline, fervor, and joy,” writes a Village Voice reviewer. “The pounding feet and agile bodies, the drums and vibrant human voices all send a message — one of courage and hope.”

Immersing herself in flamenco, fandango, buleria, and tango, Shankar has collaborated with renowned flamenco producer Javier Limón and gifted Spanish musicians to develop a new sound that reinterprets Iberian genres within Indian ragas and rhythms. The brains behind the laughter is mad genius and three-time Tony-winner Brooks himself — who wrote the music and lyrics and co-wrote the book — along with his record-breaking team from The Producers, five-time Tony-winning director and choreographer Susan Stroman and three-time Tony-winning writer Thomas Meehan.

Diavolo explores isolation, fear, destiny, survival, faith, modernization, and danger in the shadow of a technological world. The company’s appearance at Penn State features the world premiere of a work commissioned by the Center for the Performing Arts. The program also includes Fearful Symmetries, which starts and ends with a cube illuminating the parallel between mathematics and the human soul, and Trajectoire, a visceral journey set on a twenty-first-century galleon tossing on a sea of emotions.
