Grange scholarships available to members

BELLEFONTE — College students who also are Grange members may be eligible for Grange scholarships and loan programs, including:

■ The Pennsylvania State Grange Foundation scholarship, which is available to any Grange member in good standing entering his or her junior or senior year of college.

Candidates should be in need of financial assistance and be studying any subject at any institute of higher learning. Applicants are eligible to receive a $500 grant each year for a maximum of two years. More than one grant may be awarded in any given year, depending on the amount available in the fund, according to the foundation. 

The deadline is for applying is Tuesday, May 1.

■ The Deaf Interpreter Scholarship is part of a long relationship with the deaf community, and one way the Grange continues to support programs that assist the deaf and hearing impaired. Applicants must be Grange members in good standing and be enrolled in a credible program leading to certification as an interpreter for the deaf.

A $250 grant will be awarded to the best applicant. The deadline for applying is Tuesday, May 1.

■ The Grange Scholarship Endowment at Penn State University is designed to recognize the outstanding work of an undergraduate student enrolled in at least his or her sophomore year at any campus of Penn State who demonstrates financial need.

The recipient of the scholarship will be selected by the Penn State Office of Student Affairs Committee from nominees provided by the Pennsylvania State Grange Scholarship Committee. This is the sole method to be used to identify students who are Grange members.

The $1,500 scholarship will be awarded for one academic year and may be renewed for subsequent years providing the recipient continues to meet all conditions of eligibility and no other eligible applicants are identified.

The deadline for applying is Tuesday, May 1.

■ The Rhone Scholarship honors Leonard Rhone, the third master of the Pennsylvania State Grange and the man recognized as starting Progress Grange 96 in Centre Hall, Centre County Pomona Grange 13, other Granges throughout Centre County and the Centre County Grange Encampment and Fair. 

The scholarship is available only to those pursuing a degree in agriculture or human development and family services at Penn State. One scholarship in the amount of $300 will be available each year. Eligible candidates must be a members of the Grange in good standing and secure a recommendation from both the master of their subordinate and Pomona Granges. Deadline also is Tuesday, May 1.

■ The Santee Student Loan was established by Dr. Ellis M. Santee, an active Grange member and country doctor who knew the importance of a good education. The interest-free loan of $500 is given to a Grange member or member’s child who meets the criteria. A recipient can reapply each year if he or she is enrolled as full-time student.

A maximum of four loans will be given to any one individual. A written repayment promise is required and should be submitted to the  state Grange within six months of graduation. Minimum repayment requirement is $15 per month per $500 borrowed, payable over a three-year period. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, May 1.
