ASTATE COLLEGE — Lisa Ko, author of the National Book Award finalist "The Leavers," will visit Schlow Centre Region Library this month to discuss her acclaimed debut novel.

Ko will speak from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, in the library's Downsbrough Community Room. A book signing will follow.

"The Leavers," which won the 2016 PEN/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction, tells the story of an undocumented immigrant mother who disappears and the son she leaves behind. Ko's book was inspired by a 2009 New York Times story about an undocumented immigrant woman who was held largely in solitary confinement for a year and a half.

Ko's writing has appeared in "Best American Short Stories 2016," the New York Times and other publications.

Admission to the talk is free and no registration is required.

Prior to the event, Schlow's Afternoon Book Club will discuss "The Leavers" from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, in the library's Joyce's Sun Room.
