Frost Fest offers free activities at Schlow

STATE COLLEGE — The weather outside might be frightful in mid-December in State College, but things will be warming up inside Schlow Centre Region Library as a new family event comes to the region. Schlow is hosting Frost Fest Dec. 14 and 15, with activities happening throughout the library.

The free event is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 14, and 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Dec.

Some of the Frost Fest activities include Frost Fest Flurry, a giant, walkthrough board game that will be played in the Downsbrough Community Room. A fun photo opportunity will be available at the end of the game, and each family will be able to pick up a printed copy of their picture at the Adult Services desk on the second floor. They can then decorate a frame for it in the Young Adult area. Other activities include cookie-decorating in the Sun Room, courtesy of Dolce Vita Desserts, as well as wintry crafts, an ice fishing game, and storytimes in the children’s department.

“We’re spreading things out throughout the library in the hopes that everyone will be able to find something fun to do, and if you arrive at one station and it’s a bit crowded, you can just head to another in the meantime and then come back,” says children’s services librarian Katie Brennan.

Creating a new event from scratch had its challenges, including narrowing down the ideas that came out of the brainstorming meetings.

“We had so many neat ideas,” Bannon says. “We had fun thinking about what families might like to do together — and the idea of coming together to play a board game on a chilly winter day had a cozy feel to it. We have done a life-size Candy Land game for Summer Reading a couple of years ago that was pretty popular, and so we decided to create a similar game with a winter wonderland feel to it. We started with that and worked out ideas from there.”

As an added bonus, anyone who visits Schlow during Frost Fest, whether they participate in Frost Fest activities or just stop by to check out library materials, can enter to win a Frost Fest Friend. Each library visitor can fill out an entry slip for a chance to win a winter-themed stuffed animal of their choice. Winners will be notified via email the week following Frost Fest.

With all the winter and holiday activities happening in December, Schlow is hoping Frost Fest becomes part of an annual tradition for everyone in Happy Valley.

“We love being a community center here in Centre County,” Brennan says, “so being able to offer events like this alongside our day-to-day services makes us feel very lucky.”
