FBELLEFONTE — Dominion Energy has awarded FaithCentre a $5,000 grant to purchase fresh produce for food bank client distribution during the winter months.

“Our clients love receiving fresh produce and it is so much healthier than canned alternatives,” said FaithCentre executive director Nicole Summers. “Everyone at the FaithCentre is very excited about this opportunity to help meet our clients’ nutritional needs.”

FaithCentre is committed to providing healthy food choices to those it serves, and to achieve this goal partners with local grocery stores and community gardens to offer fresh fruits and vegetables. While there is an abundance of donated produce during the growing season, fresh  produce is in short supply and expensive to buy during the winter months.

Founded in 2003, FaithCentre works to address issues attendant to local poverty. In addition to being home to a thrift store, community kitchen and emergency aid program, it hosts the food bank for the greater Bellefonte area and a pet food pantry for all of Centre County.

“While many of us look forward to the new year, we recognize that many people in our communities struggle to afford the basics needed for a secure, healthy and productive life,” said Hunter A. Applewhite, president of the Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation. “These grants will help fill critical needs for nutritious food, safe shelter and the medical care essential for a better future.”

Dominion Energy, headquartered in Richmond, Va., is one of the nation’s largest producers and transporters of energy. The Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation supports nonprofit causes that meet basic human needs, protect the environment, promote education and encourage community vitality.
