Letter from the Editor: Here’s What You Told Us

by on November 02, 2018 10:57 AM

Back in February, we launched a reader survey to find out more about what you think of Town&Gown.

We wanted to know what you like, and what we can do better or differently. We also wanted to learn a little bit more about you.

The response was both gratifying and educational. Hundreds of you took the time to fill out our survey – in print and online.

Here are some highlights of what you told us:

  • About 75 percent of readers who responded live in Centre County. Most of the rest are from nearby counties in central Pennsylvania. But readers checked in from such places as California, Georgia, Massachusetts, and Virginia.
  • The majority of respondents are 40 or older, married, and currently working. Two-thirds of those who answered are women.
  • Our readers bleed blue and white, with about one-quarter of respondents identifying themselves as Penn State alums.
  • About 80 percent said they read the magazine for its unique stories and to find out what’s going on in the community. In fact, our “What’s Happening” calendar is the most popular of the regular features.
  • The food scene is also a big attraction. Two-thirds said they’re hungry for our “Taste of the Month” and “Dining Out” features.
  • And we’re happy to report that 85 percent of readers said they’ve taken action as a result of an advertisement in the magazine.

As for what readers would like to see more of, a couple of common responses are even more coverage of the region’s rich history, and more on young professionals and up-and-coming businesses. Readers said they’d also like to see more coverage of local communities beyond State College and the Penn State campus.

Several readers offered another suggestion that strikes a strong chord with us and is something we had been zeroing in on ourselves: a greater focus on the community’s growing diversity.

We are already taking these suggestions to heart, and we hope you’ve seen that reflected in our magazine over the past several months. Look for much more going forward.

Many readers offered kind comments, including, “I look forward to reading it every time and [it] makes me proud to live in Centre County,” and, “It’s perfect the way it is.”

But, just to keep our egos in check, there was the reader who reported looking at the magazine when “bored at work.”

Those who submitted the survey were eligible for prizes. We’ll have an announcement on the winners next month.

While the survey is complete, we always embrace your feedback. Please reach out to me at the email below, or at (814) 238-5051, ext. 613.

Thanks for the insight!
