Letter from the Publisher: Back in the Community that I Love

by on February 01, 2019 1:33 PM

It has been only about a month since I was officially named publisher at Barash Media and Town&Gown. In this very short period of time, I have learned just how much I don’t know.

Having served for the past 10 years as publisher of the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, a daily newspaper, it was only natural that I would gain institutional knowledge that would allow me to function in a confident and streamlined manner. A daily newspaper has a certain rhythm and motion to the daily workflow, something that after a 25-year career in the newspaper business came naturally to me. Like the captain of a mighty ship, I could make decisions and bark out commands without giving it a second thought.

I can tell you now, with full certainty, all that swagger comes to a screeching halt when you start a new job.

Changing jobs right before the holidays and having to re-learn all that one knows about daily operations is a very humbling experience. While it is expected that there will be some differences, it is never fully grasped how much change is actually in the works. Not immediately knowing the history of a project or who an account contact might be can be frustrating and a little intimidating. It takes a little while to learn your way around the business again.

Fortunately, I have a very professional and knowledgeable staff that knows exactly what they are doing. The quality of their work, and the pride and dedication that they put into each publication, is evident every month. Town&Gown is truly fortunate to have such a team. I am very excited and proud to be part of this cherished State College legacy. I am also greatly appreciative of all the members of our community who have welcomed Town&Gown into their homes. Our jobs are much more gratifying knowing your genuine appreciation for our magazine.

Within a few weeks, I will know my way around the new software and have a grasp of all our publications. Soon, I will be out and about in the community, visiting and speaking with clubs, businesses, and nonprofit organizations. I will be on campus and spending time in State College, Bellefonte, Boalsburg, and Philipsburg. My goal is to engage our entire community and unite them in a way that promotes the places we call home within the pages of Town&Gown.

The swagger will be back. But more importantly, I’m already back in the community that I love and call home.

Enjoy your February…
