Police Identify Man Killed at Weapons Expo Near Hollidaysburg

State Police say the shooting death of a Blair County man at a private gun show Wednesday night appears to be an accident.
Authorities have identified 36-year-old Michael Duncan Kurty of Hollidaysburg as the victim. Kurty was shot once in the head by a Gatling 7.62 mini-gun that was mounted on the back of a Hummer.
The shooting happened around 8:30pm Wednesday. More than 100 people had gathered at the Hollidaysburg Sportsmen’s Club in Frankstown Township as part of a weapons exhibition offered by East Coast Gun Sales of Duncansville.
A demonstration of the new military-style machine gun was being put on. State Police Troop G spokesman Trooper Jeff Petucci says during the demonstration the weapon malfunctioned and discharged.
"There was some sort of jam in the gun," said Petucci. "It was when they were trying to clear the jam, the gun went off."
Kurty worked alongside the Duncansville Borough Police Department as an auxiliary officer and he conducted firearms training for many local law enforcement agencies.
State Police Trooper Matthew McCalpin is leading the investigation. He said Kurty was proficient in operating all types of firearms.
"I talked to several local police departments who stated they had used Mr. Kurty as a firearms instructor...he had taught their officers how to use weapons," said McCalpin. "When they were at his store at East Coast Gun Sales, he would help them find weapons that would be the most comfortable for them to use."
The incident remains under investigation. A U.S. Army weapons team out of Virginia and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms were called in to investigate and to dismantle the weapon.
