STATE COLLEGE — Everyone in town knows that Central PA 4th Fest is a brilliant patriotic event, with a race, parade, entertainment and of course, the awesome firework display that lights up the Centre Region sky. What a show it is for the whole community.

Behind the scenes, it takes a community of volunteers to make the show go on. After all, the entire non-profit event is operated by hundreds of volunteers, said director Frank Savino.

Central PA 4th Fest in now looking for those community members who are willing to give back and help put on the big show, so don’t miss a chance to give back to the community and sign up at

“It is a great way to give back and be a part of a patriotic event for the community,” said Savino. There are many different ways to donate time, either by helping for a couple hours at the parade or race or being a part of the team the whole day, until the last bang is heard in the sky. Volunteers are also given a VIP pass to the fireworks display.

“There are many options, and it doesn’t have to be the day of. We also need help leading up to the event as well,” said Savino.
Here are some of the ways volunteers can be part of the fun:

* Starting two weeks before the event, volunteers start setting up the pyro field. For volunteers there is a chance to help with the actual fireworks display;

* The Firecraker Race needs people to help stuff race bags before hand, staff along the race course, and assist in registration as well as at the finish line;

* The Independence Day Parade staff starts setting up at 11 a.m. and the group needs additional help to organize groups, set up barricades and raise a 15x25-foot American flag over Allen Street. The parade starts at 2 p.m. and volunteer opportunities during the parade include helping along the parade route, directing parade groups at the route’s end and parade clean up;

* Throughout the day the celebrations crew is busy serving free hot dogs and cake, staffing a merchandise booth, assisting with one of the music stages as well as supervising children's area games. There is also need for volunteers in many other roles including assisting with the lumberjack challenges, mechanical bull riding, roller derby event and the BMX bike show; and

* Afterwards, people are needed to clean up and tear down that night and the next day.

Savino said people can sign up to volunteer at any time, but it is helpful if they do so prior to July 1.
