WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Glenn "GT" Thompson, R-Howard Township, recently announced that Kristina Hughes, of State College, has accepted an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.

Hughes, the daughter of Edward and Maria Hughes, of State College, is a senior at State College Area High School.

“Ms. Hughes has excelled in the classroom, on the playing field, in extracurricular activities and in service to her church and community,” Thompson said. “I know that Kristina will become a leader at West Point in the same manner she did at State High. I was pleased to nominate Ms. Hughes, and I wish her the best of luck as a cadet.”

Hughes has achieved the highest levels of choir as both a Master Singers member and a Chamber Singers a capella member. She also is part of the Modern Music Masters Honors Society and currently serves as chapter president.

In addition to her musical interests, she is active in lacrosse and tennis at State High. Hughes also has taken an active role in her church, serving as a cantor, member of the choir and a vacation Bible school group leader.
