MILLHEIM — The residents of Penns Valley have long been known for helping fellow citizens in times of trouble. It’s one of those times for the family of Penns Valley resident Ronnie Ticknor Jr.

Ticknor, a 16-year-old sophomore at Penns Valley Area High School, was recently diagnosed with T-cell leukemia. In October, he began receiving chemotherapy treatments at the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. His family has incurred many expenses for treatments and multiple trips per week to and from the Danville facility.

Historic Millheim Hotel owner Beth Cowher and her husband, Buddy, decided to help the Ticknor family by organizing a fundraising meal, consisting of grilled chicken, baked beans, macaroni salad and rolls. Everything was prepared by the Millheim Hotel staff and the food was served on Nov. 23. Cowher said 160 meals were prepared and proceeds from the meal would be donated to the Ticknor family.

A steady stream of customers was seen that day, picking up meals for eat-in or takeout. Cowher said she plans additional benefit meals for the Ticknor family in the near future.
