Phone scammers claiming to be from sheriff’s office

by on August 08, 2019 8:21 AM

BELLEFONTE — The Centre County Sheriff’s Office has reported it has been receiving several calls a day from individuals who are being scammed by callers that say they are calling from the sheriff’s office.

The victims of these calls say the call originates from different phone numbers, but most recently from (814) 281-5903.

The scammers have also been telling victims that there is a warrant for their arrest for “failure to appear for a federal court warrant” for a court hearing that was scheduled. When this number is called back, it is an automated voice telling you to leave a message and Sgt. Thompson will return the call. These calls/scammers sometimes seem legitimate, but authorities are asking call receivers to contact the sheriff’s office to confirm.

The sheriff’s office said if you are receiving these calls, do not give them any personal information, bank account information, money orders or purchase any kind of money/gift/iTunes cards. The Centre County Sheriff’s Office will not contact you and ask you for personal or bank account information.

If you are unsure, contact the office at

(814) 355-6803 or your local law enforcement agency.
