BELLEFONTE - The Centre County Sheriff’s Office is warning that a scammer claiming to be a deputy from the Sheriff’s Office has been soliciting residents.

A press release from Sheriff Bryan Sampsel’s office said that multiple calls have been received from individuals who are being scammed. The victims of the call said that scammer called from (814) 357-3049 portraying themselves to be “Deputy Brooks” from the sheriff’s office.

When the number is called back the following message is heard, “You reached the desk of Deputy Brooks with the Centre County Sheriff’s Office. I’m currently away from my desk, please leave a brief message and I will return your call. For Deputy Brooks press one.”

The Sheriff’s Office said it will not contact people in this way and would not ask for personal or bank account information. The sheriff’s office asks that anyone who receives these calls to not give out any personal information, bank account numbers, information for the purchase of money orders or purchase any kind of money cards.

If someone is unsure about a call, they are encouraged to call the sheriff’s office at (814) 355-6803 or contact a local law enforcement agency.
