An Ode to Warmer Weather: What's to Love About It (and What I Don't Like so Much)

by on April 09, 2013 1:29 PM

Spring has sprung!

I love seeing the sun again and being outdoors for various activities. Walking is much more enjoyable when you don’t have to worry about which direction the blustery wind is blowing.

I’m not a big fan of the rain showers which can pop up unexpectedly. Those walks aren’t as much fun when you are soaked.

I love the showers when I’m expecting them and even the occasional thunderstorm when I’m not on the golf course.

I love being on the golf course again. There is something very serene and calm about being back on the golf course.

I’m not a big fan of my golf game being back on display. There is something very aggravating about visiting all areas of the course, especially the wooded and watered areas with search parties for my ball. Serenity, and sanity, gone.

I love the start of baseball season when even Pirates fans can dream of having what all fans dream about... a .500 season. Baseball is innocence and it is nice to have it back.

I’m not a big fan of wrestling season being over. The Nittany Lions are an entertaining watch and it’s a long wait until November. But we do have some great memories to savor.

I love being able to wear just a light jacket and the fact that you can step outside without sweating or without having to bundle up. Comfortable temperatures make for a comfortable life.

I’m not a big fan of Daylight Saving Time. I enjoy the daylight hours in the evening but I miss that hour and believe we could simply adjust the work day rather than adjust the clock. I just feel like we’re all lying to ourselves to make ourselves feel better. Then again, it gives us an idea of what it would be like to serve in Congress.

I love seeing the girls in their spring dresses, their short-shorts and summer tops. Less is more in the Spring.

I’m not a big fan of all of the distractions when I’m driving. More bicycles, more pedestrians, more skateboards -- all competing for my attention.

I love the birds chirping, the buds on the trees, the flowers blooming. Life is renewed in the Spring.

I’m not a big fan of the bugs and pests that start coming out. Trying to keep rodents and bugs out of the house is an annual battle.

I’m not a big fan of the road projects. I enjoy having good roads to drive on but lack the necessary patience to wait while the work is done. Trying to navigate a route that avoids all of the various projects is a challenge that rivals completing the Rubik’s cube - something else I never did figure out.

I love opening up the windows and allowing the spring air to waft through the house.

I’m not a big fan of the roadkill. I realize we have roadkill year-round but there seem to more little critters splattered on the roads in these months than at any other time. It’s unpleasant to see and can provide some nasty odors. It’s a lot like the Pirates offense.

I love the NHL playoffs -- the most intense of the sports’ postseasons in my opinion. I especially enjoy watching the mighty Penguins court Lord Stanley’s Cup. This should be an annual rite of Spring.

I’m not a big fan of the NBA playoffs - the least interesting of all the sports postseasons in my opinion. I know where I wanted LeBron to take his talents whether it’s physically possible or not.

I love the Blue White game. It’s a chance to see some football and little kids get to enjoy the carnival and meet some of the players they look up to. And Penn State always wins the Spring game.

I’m not a big fan of the grass starting to grow. Lawns are fun to play on but not as fun to work on. Mowing the lawn is among the most tedious of man’s tasks on earth.

I love planting gardens and knowing that fresh food is coming -- we’ll reap what we sow.

I’m not a big fan of the speed limits in the spring. Gravity has a greater impact on my right foot in the spring than at any other time. Windows down, speed up - it’s just the way science works. And enforcement seems to be stronger in the spring than at any other time.

I’m not a big fan of the manure getting spread seemingly everywhere. Then again, it gives us an idea of what it’s like to be in Congress.

I love the big sporting events - the Masters and the Kentucky Derby and the Pirates/Cubs showdowns. I love getting the grill out, having a beer on the porch and planning vacations.

Spring has sprung and I am a fan.

Let the temperatures rise and the rain fall. May the flowers bloom and the clothing shed and the games get played.

And may Congress stop spreading the manure and lying to us.
