Director Amir Bar-Lev brings the story of 4-year-old Marla Olmstead to the big screen. Olmstead rocketed from total obscurity into international renown with her paintings that have given her the label of “a budding Picasso.” Suddenly, Marla was everywhere, even causing major television programs to get into bidding wars over who would host an appearance by Marla.
The attention on Marla, however, soon became a bit more negative. Shortly before her fifth birthday, CBS’ 60 Minutes aired an exposé suggesting that the paintings were actually painted by Marla’s father, an amateur painter himself. Marla was quickly torn down, labeled a fraud.
Bar-Lev put together his documentary in the hopes of looking at all sides of the story. Is Marla a painting genius, or is her father really behind everything? It’s up to the audience to decide.
