14 Letter Winners Return to State College Field Hockey in 2019

The State College varsity field hockey team had a successful year in 2018. Despite posting a 9-9-1 record, the girls won the District 6 championship before falling in the first round of the PIAA tournament against District 3’s Exeter Township.

Just two girls from that 2018 team graduated in Kelsey Love and Sally Stahl, giving third-year head coach Beth Mink plenty of returning experience on the field in 2019.

“Strength in leadership amongst the upperclassmen has been very promising during the first week of pre-season and has resulted in strong cohesiveness,” said Mink.

That leadership is coming from the 14 letter winners, which includes Rebecca Bonness, Libby Fortin, Bayla Furmanek, Maddie King, Natalie Kissell, Kendall Kleinman, Jojo Lee, Morgan Marshall, Leah Moyer, Isabella Parrillo, Lizzie Paterno, Maddie Tambroni, Kyra Whitlark and Amelia Wykcoff.

So far in the early going, Mink said she has seen the attitude and work ethic not only between the lines, but outside of field hockey as well.

“They continue to be self-disciplined, work hard and gain confidence each time they stop on the field,” she said, “and, allow for it to carry off the field as well.”

Mink said she just wants to the team to be there for each other.

“They be for the teammate standing next to them on the field, off the field and in the classroom,” she said. “They change their perspective from a ‘me to we’ mindset, so they grow together as a whole and complete team.

“I am very excited to see this group perform this year.”

State College opens the regular season on Aug. 31 at North Allegheny.
