on September 04, 2008 8:52 AM
The 2008 Labor Day driving period proved to be a deadly one on Pennsylvania roadways.

State Police statistics released Wednesday show that 16 people were killed and 412 people were injured in crashes they investigated during the four-day driving period. Acing State Police Commissioner Frank Pawlowski says troopers investigated a total of 789 crashes.

Pawlowski says four of the fatal crashes were alcohol-related and 11 of the people who were killed were not wearing their seatbelts.

The number of fatalities this year was up significantly over 2007’s Labor Day driving period, when eight people were killed and 342 were injured on Pennsylvania’s roadways.
