3 SCASD Schools Deemed Safe After Mold Cleanup

Three local schools have been cleared of mold and declared safe.

After thorough cleaning and air quality tests at Corl Street Elementary, Radio Park Elementary and Mount Nittany Middle School, State College Area School District received lab results from independent inspectors on Tuesday deeming the schools safe and cleared for occupancy, the district announced on Tuesday night.

Cleaning is still continuing at Mount Nittany's library and air quality tests will be done there later this week, but its closure will not affect the rest of the building, according to the district.

This summer's heavy rain and humidity caused moisture inside the buildings and combined with insufficient airflow to create conditions conducive for mold to develop.

Cleanup was already under way at Mount Nittany when mold was identified at Corl Street and Radio Park. None of the mold was identified as Stachybotrys or "black" mold.

At Corl Street, the mold was found in two exterior modular units that are being used while construction and renovations are under way at the school. Radio Park's basement flooded during recent heavy rainfall, causing mold in the basement room.

"To remedy the mold presence, an independent contractor dehumidified the buildings, cleaned surfaces with an antimicrobial agent, and purified the environment with HEPA air scrubbers," Superintendent Bob O'Donnell wrote in an email to families on Tuesday.

All buildings are now open and will be occupied by faculty and staff on Wednesday. The first day of school for students is Monday, Aug. 27.

“We are grateful to the contractors for their clean-up of the impacted schools,” O’Donnell said. “Additionally, we appreciate our faculty members for their flexibility and patience while the problem was resolved.”
