4th Fest Parade Takes Celebratory Spirit Through State College

Local churches rang their bells at 2 p.m. on Thursday for the annual Freedom Bell Ringing, and minutes later members of the Boalsburg Fire Company began moving behind a police escort in front of the State College Municipal Building.

It marked the start of Central PA 4th Fest's annual Independence Day parade, a celebration of community and nation that made its way from downtown State College to the Bryce Jordan Center over the course of about 90 minutes.

Residents and visitors lined the streets on a hot and mostly sunny afternoon to enjoy everything from musical performances to clowns to dance to baton twirlers. Military personnel, emergency responders and community groups were well-represented, and there was plenty of candy tossed to spectators from the parade participants.

The Nittany Highland Drum and Pipe Band and Curwensville High School Marching Band played before and during the parade, and Dialed Action BMX performed a stunt show prior to the parade, its first of several on the day.

After the parade, festivities shifted to the Penn State campus near Beaver Stadium and the Bryce Jordan Center, with live music, food, activities and entertainment throughout the afternoon and into the early evening. The big draw of the day — the fireworks show — was set to begin after dark, around 9:15 p.m.
