97 New COVID-19 Cases Reported in Centre County

Centre County added 97 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday to bring its total to 1,727 since the first was reported on March 20.

The county also had 291 new negative test results. A total of 22,520 Centre County patients have tested negative for the virus.

According to DOH data, Centre County has one COVID-19 hospitalization.

Among Saturday's new cases, 95 are confirmed and two are probable.

In the past two weeks, Centre County has added 1,075 new cases, the vast majority in the State College and University Park zip codes and most connected to Penn State student testing.

DOH's early warning monitoring dashboard was updated on Friday to show for the second consecutive week Centre County had the highest incidence rate in the state over the prior seven days at 322.5 per 100,000 people. The next closest was York at 85.2. Centre County also had the highest positivity rate for Sept. 11-17 at 12.1%.

Also on Friday, DOH announced a pop-up clinic for free COVID-19 testing will open at the Nittany Mall on Sept. 25 and that department staff will be working with county and municipal officials on recommendations for localized mitigation efforts.

Penn State President Eric Barron said on Friday said the university sees no need to move to fully remote learning at this time. Penn State has reported 973 student positives resulting from tests completed over the past two weeks. State College Area schools, meanwhile, will remain in district-wide remote learning for a third consecutive week.

Statewide, the health department reported 1,162 new positives increasing Pennsylvania's total to 149,845.

There were 13,475 new negative test results statewide. A total of 1,746,280 patients in Pennsylvania have tested negative for the virus.

An estimated 82% of COVID-19 patients in the state — about 122,873 — have recovered, according to a DOH calculation.

Across Pennsylvania, 470 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, with 47 requiring use of a ventilator.

The health department reported 22 new COVID-19 deaths, bringing the state's total at 7,956. DOH has reported 11 total COVID-19 deaths for Centre County, the most recent on Aug. 14. The coroner's office has confirmed only seven, ranging in age from 74 to 96.

Most COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths have been among patients 65 and older, according to DOH.

Of the patients who have tested positive to date the age breakdown is as follows:

  • Approximately 1% are ages 0-4;
  • Nearly 2% are ages 5-12;
  • Approximately 4% are ages 13-18;
  • Nearly 13% are ages 19-24; 
  • Approximately 36% are ages 25-49; 
  • Nearly 22% are ages 50-64; and
  • Approximately 22% are ages 65 or older.

Among Pennsylvania's total cases, 145,335 are confirmed and 4,510 are probable. In Centre County, 1,667 are confirmed and 60 are probable.

16844 (Julian) 6 confirmed

16877 (Warrior's Mark) 5 confirmed

16865 (Pennsylvania Furnace) 5 confirmed

16845 (Karthaus) 5 confirmed

16820 (Aaronsburg) 5 confirmed

16677 (Sandy Ridge), 16804 (State College), 16826 (Blanchard), 16829 (Clarence), 16832 (Coburn), 16852 (Madisonburg), 16856 (Mingoville), 16868 (Pine Grove Mills), 16872 (Rebersburg), 16874 (Snow Shoe) and 16882 (Woodward) each have 1-4 confirmed or probable cases.

Among Centre County's bordering counties, Blair now has 559 [+11] total cases, Union has 451, Huntingdon has 395 [+2], Clearfield has 297 [+2], Mifflin has 209 [+1] and Clinton has 186 [+1].
