Multiple accidents shut down parts of both Interstate 99 and Interstate 80 in Centre County Friday afternoon as heavy snow squalls causing whiteout conditions moved through the area.

All lanes were closed on I-99 southbound and northbound between exit 52 at Bald Eagle and exit 68 at Gray’s Woods as of 2:30 p.m. Multi-vehicle accidents were reported in both directions, according to PennDOT. About 40 vehicles were involved in the two crashes, according to a PennDOT spokesperson, and traffic was backed up for several miles.

Shortly before 5 p.m. I-99 southbound re-opened to one-lane traffic. By 7 p.m. both directions had fully re-opened.

A section of Interstate 80 was closed after an accident involving at least 25 vehicles occurred around noon, according to PennDOT. I-80 eastbound between exit 133 at Kylertown and exit 144 at Snow Shoe was closed because of the accident, according to PennDOT. The road was fully reopened by about 4:45 p.m.

A section of I-80 westbound in nearby Clinton County between exit 192 at Jersey Shore and exit 185 at Logan was closed after another multi-vehicle accident.
