Annual Coquese Drive Raises Funds for Centre County Women's Resource Center

Admittedly, she doesn't play golf. Well, except for one day a year.

But Coquese Washington, head coach of the Penn State women's basketball team, says that won't stop her from working with the Centre County Women's Resource Center to raise funds and awareness for its programs.

"It's important that as a community we come together to support the Women's Resource Center. They just provide so many valuable and important services here in Centre County," says Washington.

With non-profits often seeing cuts in government funding, Washington says events like the seventh annual Coquese's Drive for the Centre County Women's Resource Centre at the Penn State Blue Course are critical.

"It's up to the community to supplement that and support non-profits," Washington says.

More than 100 golfers participated in Friday's event. All proceeds go to the women's center.

The center provides services to victims of domestic and sexual abuse, including shelter, legal advocacy and counseling.

Anne Ard, executive director for the Centre County Women's Resource Centre, says the event not only raises much needed funds, "but it also about helping people understand the services we provide."

Ard added that participants in the event "may be folks who didn't know about us or what we do. It just helps us get the word out about what we do and why it's important."

Friday's event raised $20,000.

Last year, the event raised more than $18,000 for the women's center. In it's seven year history the golf tournament has raised more than $118,000.
