Attorney General's Office in Talks with Hilltop Owners Over Financial Assistance

by on February 28, 2013 5:14 PM

Homeowners in Hilltop Mobile Home Park could soon receive the financial assistance they were previously denied when told to move their homes off of the lot by Feb. 28 – today – once local representation from the state Attorney General's Office wraps up talks with the owners.

Agent supervisor Tom Creehan said officials in Harrisburg notified the State College branch of the impending closure. In December 2011, an amendment was made to the Mobile Home Community Rights Act that "called for certain monetary sums to be provided for those [who are] uprooted from existing mobile home parks," Creehan said.

Hilltop's owners, Kenneth and Sharon Mayes, intend to sell the land at 1275 Pennsylvania Ave. to Trinitas Ventures. The Lafayette, Indiana-based company plans to develop the land into luxury student housing.

Mobile home owners have since been fighting eviction, packing College Township Council meetings in hopes of confronting the developer. Trinitas Ventures has yet to present a proposal before council.

Homeowners were expected to move out by the Feb. 28 deadline and were initially told they would receive no financial assistance during relocation. Creehan said that is currently being negotiated.

Creehan said his office is unable to do anything about the sale of the land.

A Hilltop Community Design Charette is being held at 6 p.m. Thursday at the New Leaf Initiative, 100 South Fraser Street. The meeting will offer information about "what a renewed and revitalized Hilltop manufactured home community could look like," according to the community design group's website.
