State College Borough Councilman Jesse Barlow announced that he is running for a second term in this year's election.

First elected to council in 2015, Barlow will again be seeking a Democratic nomination in the May 21 primary.

Barlow is a professor of computer science and engineering at Penn State who has lived in the Centre Region since 1981 and in the borough since 2003. As a widower, he has raised two children in the State College South neighborhood.

In announcing his candidacy for re-election, Barlow said he has had success in working with fellow council members on immigrant and LGBTQ rights. He also cited work on environmental issues, including borough funding for ClearWater Conservancy's Slab Cabin Run initiative to preserve the Meyer and Everhart farms, as well as a resolution supporting a carbon fee and dividend.

"Jesse Barlow believes that to ensure State College remains a great place to live, we must continue fiscally responsible growth that reduces our carbon footprint, sustains our beautiful neighborhoods, embraces State College’s diversity, works toward creating a future that attracts young professionals and families, and respects the rights of long term and student residents," according to a news release.

He is a member of Information Technology and Communications Committee of the National League of Cities.

Barlow's borough council seat is one of four up for election this year, along with those currently held by David Brown, Cathy Dauler and Janet Engeman. Dauler is in the final year of her second consecutive term, the term limit for borough council. Engeman said in a Facebook post that she is also running for re-election.
