Bellefonte Hopes to Bring Beatlemania to Talleyrand Park

The Beatles never made it to Bellefonte back in the 1960s.

The original Beatlemania, with mop tops and crowds of screaming teenage girls that followed the Fab Four’s every move, may be long gone, but now the Bellefonte Historical and Cultural Association plans to offer the town a taste of it this summer by bringing The Cast of Beatlemania to play at Talleyrand Park. In order to make it happen, a little community support is needed.

The hope is to bring the The Cast of Beatlemania to the park on June 16 as part of the Summer Sounds from the Gazebo concert series. The Cast of Beatlemania would wrap up one of the biggest weekends in Bellefonte — the Bellefonte Cruise.

The Cast of Beatlemania is a longtime Centre County favorite, playing in the park in downtown State College and on Old Main Lawn many times.

This past summer, the group played at The State Theatre to a crowd that loved hearing the timeless hits.

The Cast of Beatlemania is a U.S. Beatles’ tribute band formed in 1980. The Cast is one of the longest-running Beatles’ tribute bands in the world. The group currently features Lenie Colacino, a former cast member of the 1977 Broadway musical “Beatlemania.”

The band recaptures the sound, look and feel from the biggest band of the ’60s and takes the crowd through the different phases of Beatlemania.

But bringing the band to Bellefonte is not cheap, said JoAnne Knepp, who is in charge of the weekly summer concerts at Talleyrand Park.

She said the concerts have been a Bellefonte staple for 30 years and The Cast of Beatlemania is one of the biggest draws they have ever tried to get.

The cost to bring the band to Bellefonte is $4,000, and Knepp said they are nearly halfway to the goal, thanks to a large donation from the Bellefonte Moose.

She has reached out to other community groups and is hopeful to get a lot of support for this unusual opportunity for Bellefonte.

People who would like to donate can contact BHCA or send a check or money order to 441 N. Spring St, Bellefonte, PA, 16823.

Concerts in the Park run from the second Sunday in June to the second Sunday in August at 7 p.m. The series features different acts each week and the rest of the lineup for the upcoming summer will be determined this month. Knepp said the atmosphere is perfect for families in the park setting. There are many benches and picnic tables along with ample lawn space for blankets and dancing.

In case of rain, the concert would be held at St. John Lutheran Church.
