Bellefonte Man Accused of Threatening Juvenile with Machete

A Bellefonte man was arrested after he  allegedly threatened to kill a juvenile female with a machete.

Bellefonte police were dispatched at about 8 p.m. on Sunday to a Reynolds Avenue residence, where Jonathan M. Berenty, 19, had gone to discuss some problems he was having with another male. According to a criminal complaint, the conversation became heated and Berenty told the other man "I ain't leaving without something."

Berenty allegedly told the other man, the female and a witness to empty their pockets so he could be sure they weren't calling the police. The female said that after she told Berenty to leave, he pulled a black and orange machete out of his backpack and "came at her."

He allegedly held the knife to her throat and said "If you keep being disrespectful I'm going to kill you." At that point police arrived and Berenty put the machete back in the backpack and hid it behind a kitchen counter.

According to the complaint, Berenty did not come to the door after being ordered to do so by officers. After they entered the room, he allegedly continued to refuse officer commands to go to the floor and was taken down by a hair drag.

Police said a wallet belonging to Berenty contained 13 bars of Xanax, for which he did not have a prescription. He allegedly said he was holding it for his mother.

A search of his backpack found a black and orange machete, two digital scales, a bag containing 99 plastic baggies, a blue plastic cup containing what Berenty allegedly said was "weed residue," and a bottle of rum, according to the complaint.

Berenty was charged with one felony count of attempted robbery; misdemeanor counts of terroristic threats, simple assault, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia; and summary offenses of criminal trespass, harassment and purchase of alcohol by a minor.

He was arraigned by District Judge Casey McClain, who set straight monetary bail at $100,000. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday
