on December 23, 2008 8:00 AM
According to the Lock Haven Express, an alleged burglar jumped into the cold waters of the Susquehanna River during a foot chase with police Sunday afternoon.

The man, Matthew Cole, 22, was taken by a Lifeflight helicopter to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville after being rescued.  Cole suffered effects of hypothermia as a result of jumping into the cold water.  He has been released from Geisinger in Danville and is now being held in the Clinton County Correctional Facility.

A burglary was reported around 3 p.m. Saturday.  The suspect entered a home on Skunk Hollow Road, North Bend and carried a safe outside into the woods.  The burglar was unable to open the safe and left it in the woods and fled the scene.

The property owners spotted the suspect in the woods near their home Sunday afternoon and call the Renovo Borough Police.  The suspect fled when he saw the homeowners.  When police arrived at the scene, they pursued the suspect into the woods and he eventually dove into the river and began to swim to the other side.

The suspect went under several times but managed to get onto the bank on the other side of the river.  Once out of the water, he tried to escape again but fell to the ground several times.

Charges are expected to be filed at a later date.  (Read More)
