CATA Donates Retired Vans to Local Nonprofit and Grace Prep High School
CATA is donating two surplus CATACOMMUTE vanpool vans to CentrePeace, Inc., and Grace Prep High School.
The vehicles, both 2005 Chevrolet 15-passenger vans that would otherwise have been retired, were made available for donation to charitable agencies with 501(c)3 status and local government agencies through a competitive application process.
Factors taken into consideration during the selection process included need, demonstrated community benefit, the number of trips to be provided, and service coordination.
CentrePeace, Inc., of Bellefonte, provides individuals approved for work release through the Centre County Correctional Facility with vocational and interpersonal skills relating specifically to the repair of used household items and furniture.
The donated van will be used to transport these individuals from the Correctional Facility to CentrePeace, Inc., for an anticipated 6,200 passenger trips annually.
At Grace Prep High School in State College, students and staff require transportation to educational activities, sporting events, training and community outreach. The van will be used to provide transportation to such activities, for an anticipated 3,000 passenger trips annually.
"It's a pleasure to be able to help other community service organizations with their transportation needs through these van donations," said Terri Quici, CATA's Commuter Services Manager.
"Even though these vans have provided many years of service for vanpool groups through the CATACOMMUTE program, we believe their condition is such that they can continue to provide service, particularly for those local groups struggling to meet their own transportation needs."
It is expected that additional vans will be made available for donation in coming years.
