Catholic Center Dedicated Saturday Morning
With friends and family taking part of the service, the Suzanne Pohland Paterno Catholic Student Faith Center was dedicated and opened Saturday morning.
"I'm excited, I'm thrilled, it is beautiful and what an addition to our community," Paterno said to StateCollege.com earlier this week.
Weekend masses will still be held inside the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center, but Paterno said she sees the Catholic community as a family that is always growing. The center is a place students can go whether it's to meditate in the chapel, read in the library or hold meetings.
The center has been a work in progress over the past several years following the groundbreaking ceremony in 2010. The years of hard worked paid off with detailed touches to the building to give it a unique feel for Penn State students and alumni alike. Some of the stained glass windows were purchased from closed-down churches. Paterno said one made in Florida, is special to the center.
"The stained glass window depicts three Penn State students and Old Main in the background. It designates that that is a student center, particularly a Penn State Catholic student center," Paterno said.
For the family, the Saturday morning dedication was not only the achievement of a goal, but a somber moment as long time Penn State head coach Joe Paterno was unable to share the special dedication with them. Paterno died this past January from lung cancer in the midst of the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal.
"My only regret is the person who shared the vision with me won't be there," Sue Paterno said earlier this week.
