Cedarbrook Fall Appears an 'Intentional Act,' State College Police Say

on February 09, 2011 9:37 AM

No charges are being filed in connection with a fall incident this week at the Cedarbook building, 320 E. Beaver Ave., State College police said Wednesday.

About 11:50 p.m. Monday, a 20-year-old Penn State student fell from a fourth-story balcony at the apartment building, according to police reports. That drop, along the Beaver Avenue-facing side of the building, is estimated at 36 feet.

"We're concluding that it was an intentional act," police Lt. Keith Robb said Wednesday. "He wasn't thrown. Nor was there any malfunction on the balcony."

Robb said that alcohol was not involved. The incident has been categorized as a health-and-safety case in police records, but police have not concluded that it was a suicide attempt, Robb said.

The student's name and condition have not been released. He was immediately taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center, then flown to the trauma unit at Altoona Hospital, Robb said.

He said the student is a resident of Cedarbrook. Witnesses said he appeared unconscious on the sidewalk when emergency responders arrived Monday night.

An investigation is continuing. Robb said police still want to hear from witnesses and anyone else who may have information relevant to the incident. The department can be reached at (814) 234-7150. Anonymous tips may be submitted via the borough website.
