on March 05, 2010 9:14 AM

Thirty-nine high school football seniors from Central Pennsylvania will be honored for their athletics, academics and community service at the 13th annual Student-Athlete Scholarship Banquet sponsored by the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame on Sunday, March 28.

State College's own tight end and defensive end Colby Way is among the recipients.

Ten of the student-athletes will be awarded a special $1,000 college scholarship for their outstanding achievements. Scholarship winners will be judged on three basic criteria: academics; football ability, performance and attitude; and leadership and citizenship.

The scholarship money can only be used by the student-athletes to help with their education at the college or university of their choice.

The chapter also will recognize the athletic and academic achievements of seven graduating football players from five area colleges and universities: Juniata, Lycoming, Penn State, St. Francis and Susquehanna. Two scholastic football officials also will be honored with lifetime achievement awards.

Greg Schiano, head football coach at Rutgers University, will be the featured speaker at the banquet, which will be held at the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel on the University Park campus, starting at 1:30 p.m., with doors opening at 12:45 p.m. Schiano is a former Penn State assistant coach and will be starting his 10th season as the head coach at Rutgers.

Since initiating the awards banquet in 1997-98, the Central Pennsylvania Chapter has given a total of $117,000 while honoring more than 400 deserving student-athletes from certain high schools located in the following area counties: Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Cameron, Centre, Clarion, Clearfield, Clinton, Elk, Huntingdon, Jefferson, Juniata, Lycoming and Mifflin counties.

Tickets for the Awards Banquet are $25.00 each and $250.00 for a table of 10. Anyone interested in purchasing tickets should contact Bill Nichol at 238-2127.
