Centre Co. Advocates to Seek Same-Sex Licenses

on February 14, 2011 7:53 AM

A number of Centre County advocates for same-sex marriage rights will make an appearance Monday at the county clerk's office in Bellefonte, 414 Holmes St., they said.

Sometime between 8:30 and 9 a.m., local members of the groups Justice League -- Activate! and GetEQUAL PA will arrive at the office to request marriage licenses for same-sex couples in the area, according to a news release.

The plan is part of a coordinated, national effort on Valentine's Day to draw attention to "the harms and impact (of same-sex couples') inability to marry," the release notes.

"Same-sex couples are denied 1,138 federal rights of marriage," Colby Woodring, co-founder of Justice League -- Activate!, said in the release. "With the tide of national opinion turning toward supporting protections for same-sex couples, we are working to overturn the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and end marriage discrimination."

A similar activity happened in Centre County on Feb. 12, 2010, when five same-sex couples sought marriage licenses at the county marriage-license office. Per law, they were denied.

In Monday's activity, participants are expected to go from the clerk's office to a local office of U.S. Rep. Glenn "G.T." Thompson, R-Howard, and ask that he vote against the DOMA -- and for the Employment Nondiscrimination Act.
