Centre County Adds 195 COVID-19 Cases

Centre County reported 195 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday to bring its total to 2,031 since the first was reported in March. It was the county's second highest single-day total to date, behind only the 212 reported one week ago.

The county had nearly a quarter of all new cases in Pennsylvania on Tuesday. Statewide, the Department of Health reported 834 new positives. 

Among the county's new cases, 194 were confirmed and one was probable.

Centre County had 653 new negative test results. A total of 23,810 patients in the county have tested negative for the virus.

According to DOH data, Centre County has one COVID-19 hospitalization.

In the past two weeks, the county has added 1,345 new cases, the vast majority in the State College and University Park zip code. According to the New York Times, Centre County is No. 6 in the country for "Where the Outbreak Is Worst," metro areas with the greatest number of new cases relative to population.

Tuesday's statewide count brings Pennsylvania's total to 151,646 COVID-19 cases.

DOH reported 10,735 new negative test results statewide. A total of 1,777,916 patients in Pennsylvania have tested negative for the virus.

An estimated 81% of COVID-19 patients in the state — about 122,833 — have recovered, according to a DOH calculation. The recovery estimate decreased by 1%.

Across Pennsylvania, 429 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, with 58 requiring use of a ventilator.

The health department reported 19 new COVID-19 deaths, bringing the state's total at 8,023. DOH has reported 11 total COVID-19 deaths for Centre County, the most recent on Aug. 14. The coroner's office has confirmed only seven, ranging in age from 74 to 96.

Most COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths have been among patients 65 and older, according to DOH.

Of the patients who have tested positive to date the age breakdown is as follows:

  • Approximately 1% are ages 0-4;
  • Nearly 2% are ages 5-12;
  • Approximately 4% are ages 13-18;
  • Nearly 13% are ages 19-24; 
  • Approximately 36% are ages 25-49; 
  • Nearly 22% are ages 50-64; and
  • Nearly 22% are ages 65 or older.

Among Pennsylvania's total cases, 147,070 are confirmed and 4,576 are probable. In Centre County, 1,969 are confirmed and 62 are probable.

16677 (Sandy Ridge), 16804 (State College), 16826 (Blanchard), 16829 (Clarence), 16832 (Coburn), 16852 (Madisonburg), 16856 (Mingoville), 16868 (Pine Grove Mills), 16872 (Rebersburg), 16874 (Snow Shoe) and 16882 (Woodward) each have 1-4 confirmed or probable cases.

One new positive was reported among employees of Centre County nursing and personal care homes, which have had a total of 37 resident cases and 24 employee cases across eight facilities

Among Centre County's bordering counties, Blair now has 599 [+10] total cases, Union has 462 [+3], Huntingdon has 399 [+3], Clearfield has 311, Mifflin has 215 [+4] and Clinton has 199 [+1].
