Four Centre County municipalities and two regional organizations have received a combined $1.8 million in Recycling Development and Implementation Grants, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection announced last week.

Municipalities and counties are eligible for up to 90 percent funding of approved recycling program costs through the grant program. Grants can be used or expanding recycling processing facilities, installing data collection systems on recycling vehicles, continuing or creating curbside recycling programs, developing educational materials and operating leaf compost facilities.

Statewide, 195 municipalities and counties were awarded a total of $37 million, according to DEP. In Centre County, that included:

Bellefonte Borough - $349,307

Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority - $350,000

Centre Region Council of Governments - $350,000

College Township - $185,978

Ferguson Township - $233,132

State College Borough - $350,000

“Recycling is such an important initiative that not only betters the environment, but it also betters our community,” said state Rep. Scott Conklin, D-Rush Township, whose 77th District includes State College. “I’m happy to announce this funding that will allow [State College]  to continue to thrive in its recycling efforts and make the 77th Legislative District a more environmentally friendly community.”
