Centre County Reports 137 New COVID-19 Cases

Centre County's spike in COVID-19 cases continued with 137 new positives reported on Friday, bringing the county's total to 1,062 since the first was reported on March 20. 

It's the county's second highest single-day increase, behind Wednesday's 184. Of Friday's new cases, 128 were in the State College and University Park zip codes, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Penn State on Friday also updated its COVID-19 dashboard to show a total of 289 new cases among the University Park community for the week of Sept. 4-10. Those included 288 student positives and one employee positive. Another 1,483 results are still pending.

The university reported an additional 25 positives from tests that had been pending for the week of Aug. 28-Sept. 3, bringing that week's total to 362.

Across Centre County on Friday, there were 778 new negative test results. A total of 19,699 patients in the county have tested negative for the virus.

According to DOH data, Centre County has two COVID-19 hospitalizations, up one from Thursday.

Statewide, the health department reported 1,008 new positives, increasing Pennsylvania's total to 142,885.

There were 12,679 new negative test results statewide. A total of 1,652,028 patients in Pennsylvania have tested negative for the virus.

An estimated 82% of COVID-19 patients in the state — about 117,166 — have recovered, according to a DOH calculation.

Across Pennsylvania, 491 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, with 64 requiring use of a ventilator.

The health department reported 17 new COVID-19 deaths, bringing the state's total at 7,837. DOH has reported 11 total COVID-19 deaths for Centre County, the most recent on Aug. 14. The coroner's office has confirmed only seven, ranging in age from 74 to 96.

Most COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths have been among patients 65 and older, according to DOH.

Of the patients who have tested positive to date the age breakdown is as follows:

  • Approximately 1% are ages 0-4;
  • Nearly 2% are ages 5-12;
  • Approximately 4% are ages 13-18;
  • Nearly 12% are ages 19-24; 
  • Nearly 37% are ages 25-49; 
  • Approximately 22% are ages 50-64; and
  • Nearly 23% are ages 65 or older.

Among Pennsylvania's total cases, 138,759 are confirmed and 4,126 are probable. In Centre County, 1,012 are confirmed and 50 are probable. Among Friday's cases 135 are confirmed and two are probable.

Among Centre County's bordering counties, Blair now has 511 [+5] total cases, Union has 420 [+4], Huntingdon has 392 [+3], Clearfield has 270 [+5], Mifflin has 185 [+8] and Clinton has 166 [+1].
