Centre County United Way on Monday officially kicked off its 2017 campaign with a community event at Toftrees Golf Resort.

The campaign will run through Jan. 31, 2018 and has a goal of $1.8 million.

“I am confident that we have assembled a strong group of volunteers who will share the CCUW story and inspire the community to support our mission,” campaign chair Fran Stevenson said in a release. “We are fighting for the health, education, and financial stability of every person in Centre County.”

A summer Pacesetter Campaign consisting of 24 local companies and 34 CCUW partner agencies preceded the general campaign. Not all pacesetter companies have yet to report their totals, but so far $351,963 has been reported, CCUW board president Betsy Dupuis said.

This year's campaign introduces a new initiative to engage campaign donors. Personal Campaign Pages encourage individuals to share their experiences and reasons for supporting CCUW and ask friends to support their personal fundraising goals and create pages of their own.

“We are fortunate to have a generous match of $50,000 for this project," said Monica Wright, CCUW’s advancement and giving specialist. "Each personal campaign page that is created and shared, up to 500 pages, will start off with a $100 donation from the match.”

Last year's campaign raised about $1.9 million, down from just over $2 million in 2015.

CCUW Executive Director Tammy Gentzel said the organization and its partner agencies are committed to a wide variety of causes impacting the community.

"No matter what issue you want to fight – homelessness, hunger, mental health, early childhood education, elder care – the CCUW Partner Network will stand with you in the fight," she said. "We will win by living united."
