Centre County United Way Kicks Off 2019 Campaign

Centre County United Way officially started its 2019 campaign on Monday with a community event at the Penn State Golf Courses, as board and staff welcomed partner agency staff, community volunteers, local businesses, donors and the Penn State campaign leadership to officially kick off the campaign season.

This marks the first campaign with Wendy Vinhage as CCUW executive director. The former Interfaith Human Services took over leadership of CCUW in July and board president Nick Lingenfelter said Vinhage "has hit the ground running."

Vinhage said she is excited about her first campaign, which will raise money for CCUW's partner agencies to provide a variety of services throughout the county.

“It is so important that the programs we fund continue to serve everyone in Centre County who needs them," Vinhage said. "I am looking forward to working with our volunteers to make this year’s campaign a success.”

Last year's campaign raised more than $1.9 million.

David Gray, Penn State senior vice president for finance and business, is in his second year as chair of the university's United Way campaign. Last year, Penn State raised about 38 percent of the overall campaign total.

"We take our commitment to United Way and to the people of Centre County seriously. I want to maximize the support CCUW receives from Penn State,” Gray said

Vinhage said that the Pacesetter fundraising over the summer raised $136,690 to get this year's campaign started.

Local radio host Jeff Brown is honorary campaign chair for 2019.

“When they asked me to be the honorary chair, I couldn’t say no. I have wanted to serve this organization, in this way, for a very long time,” Brown said.

He asked those in attendance to share their United Way stories with friends, family and co-workers.

“Tell them it is the best investment they can make in their future and in the future of our community," he said. "Tell them to live United.”
