Change from Luna 2 to Mike's Wood Grill and Bar Brings New Features, Old Favorites

For Centre County diners mourning the loss of Luna 2, 2609 E. College Ave., the situation isn’t as grim as what you might think. While Luna 2 closed earlier in the summer for remodeling and reopened in late June as Mike’s Wood Grill and Bar, the new eatery isn’t a completely foreign concept.

“We just changed the name and re-branded. We took the pasta off [the menu and] added a wood grill, so we cook all our burgers, steak and seafood [there]. We added fryers for fresh-cut fries. We also have the original Faccia Luna pizza here now,” said part-owner Mike Corbett.

After being open for a little more than a month, Corbett says the response has been positive.

“People are really enjoying everything,” he said. “They were sad to see Luna 2 go, but they’re very happy that we still kept some of the menu items from Luna 2.”

While diners no longer find Luna 2 pasta dishes on the menu, they’ll now enjoy a range of other options, many thanks to the restaurant’s addition of the wood grill.

Mike’s Wood Grill and Bar offers fresh seafood each weekend, including salmon, crab cakes and sea bass. Another unique menu item is the same hot dogs sold at PNC Park, for a summer favorite when the Pittsburgh Pirates aren’t in season.

Corbett points out the restaurant’s wide burger selection, including a meatless, pea protein, plant-based burger “that has been selling like wildfire.” He also notes that “everyone’s loving our wings…we serve an Alabama white sauce, which is a creamy, tangy, rich white barbecue sauce with a kick of heat,” and that a favorite special may soon find a permanent home on the menu.

“We’re doing a barbecue chicken and homemade mac 'n cheese [special]. The chicken is a leg, thigh, breast and a wing,” he said. “A lot of people have been raving about it and say we should put it on the menu full time.”

All in all, Corbett says the staff — which now includes an increased number of cooks and servers — has received positive reviews on almost every new menu item.

As for the future of what Corbett calls “a new chapter in Faccia Luna Enterprises’ life,” he says the team is primarily focusing on getting the new restaurant up and running and successful. However, new decor will soon grace the walls as Mike’s Wood Grill and Bar embraces a new theme.

The decor, Corbett says, is indicative of the restaurant’s central location in the community.

“I went to Bald Eagle [High School], Bellefonte [Area High School], Penns Valley [Area High School] and State [College Area] High [School] and got yearbooks from the past years,” he said. “Soon, you’ll be able to come in and see different yearbook pictures all through the place…so you’ll be able to look at [photos from] different yearbooks and say, ‘oh, there’s so-and-so in band or the glee club or on the football team.’”
