Community Spotlight: The Community Cafe at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church

on June 16, 2020 5:00 AM

The Community Cafe at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church has served a free meal every Thursday for 10 years. During the pandemic, we have been able to continue with our work and adjust our operating model thanks to our volunteers.

There never was a question of shuttering The Cafe, especially as unemployment and food insecurity became even greater issues, so for the first time, we prepared take-out meals, and we have seen the number of meals that we serve increase by 20%.

Patrons can also pick-up meals for those who are unable to be present. We do no screening as we believe if someone needs a meal, they will get a meal. We have also started our first outdoor dining service. This is an important step as we take the ‘Community’ part of the Community Cafe seriously. We strive to provide not only nutrition for the body, but also a sense of belonging. Social isolation is an issue for many, and even more so now.

We are grateful to be part of the local network of organizations that are assisting the most vulnerable. We are located at 208 W. Foster Ave. and meals are served between 5-7 p.m. It’s free, and all are welcome.

With our community facing numerous challenges because of the coronavirus pandemic, StateCollege.com is inviting any Centre County business, nonprofit organization or agency to share their stories in briefs which we will publish at no charge. Share what you'd like the community to know — what services you're offering, challenges you're facing, what you've brought to the area over the years or anything else. More details here.
