Corman, Benninghoff Announce $750,000 for Potters Mills Sewer Project

Potter Township will receive a $750,000 state grant to build a new public sewage treatment system in Potters Mills, State Senate Majority Leader Jake Corman, R-Benner Township, and Rep. Kerry Benninghoff, R-Bellefonte, announced on Friday.

“This grant is essential in advancing efforts to fix septic-system issues that have been plaguing the area for a long time,” Corman said. “Without this funding, installing a public sewer system designed to end the contamination of local wells and Potter Run would be unaffordable to many of the local residents.”

The township has been working for years to address problems with the sewer system. Officials said the water table is high and effluent in the septic systems at homes dealing with wastewater problems can easily contaminate local water supplies. Testing of some wells has found contamination.

In July, the township was awarded nearly $3 million in grants and loans from the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PennVEST) to construct a 14,000-gallon-per-day sewage treatment plant and 3.5 miles of new force mains, as well as to install 57 new septic tanks.

Centre County Commissioners in September approved moving forward with a Community Development Block Grant application to complete the funding for the project. Without the additional funding, a households user fee of at least $128 per month would have been required.

“Because of this grant funding, after years of ongoing problems and water contamination, the residents of Potters Mills will finally be able to construct the public sewer system and treatment plant that they desperately need and deserve,” Benninghoff said. “I am very pleased to bring these tax dollars back to the district where they will be put to good use.”

Construction of the system is expected to begin in the spring.
