The latest numbers have been released and the cost of the Jerry Sandusky scandal has now passed the $50 million dollar mark. Penn State says it has spent a total of $50,459,828 as of July 31. That's according to the latest update posted on the Penn State progress website.

That figure is $1,025,962 more than the previous update which was reported for the period ending on June 30. Nearly $575,000 of the increase was attributed to a category called "University Legal Services/Defense."

The university releases the totals as the invoices come in. It typically takes about 45 days for the updates to be calculated.

University Spokesperson David La Torre says the university does not comment on these expenditures.

Sandusky, the former Penn State defensive coordinator, was convicted in June 2012 on 45 counts of child sex abuse. He is currently serving a sentence of 30 to 60 years.
