A major credit card company has filed a debt collection lawsuit against a local high-profile attorney, according to court records.

Demetrios Tsarouhis, an attorney for American Express, filed paperwork Monday at the Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte that accuses local attorney Joe Amendola of failing to make payments on a credit card.

Amendola was the defense attorney for Jerry Sandusky, a former Penn State defensive coordinator under Joe Paterno, who was convicted of sexually abusing young boys and sentenced to 30-60 years in prison.

In the debt collection documents, American Express claims Amendola owes more than $25,000 on the credit card.

The company is asking for the amount owed and costs related to the lawsuit.

Amendola could not immediately be reached for comment.
