Damage Estimate Expected by Wednesday After Hotel Do-De Fire
More than 36 hours after a fire devastated the Hotel Do-De in historic Bellefonte, a crowd of supporters stood by the building's owner as he waited for answers.
John Dann Sr., the owner of the building and the hotel on the 100 block of East High Street, said there still is no estimate of the damage that was done to the old building.
He said hours have been spent talking to police, the fire department and his insurance agent in an effort to get some answers.
The cause of the fire still is under investigation.
Bellefonte Fire Department Chief Tim Schreffler said an monetary estimate of the damage is expected to be confirmed by Wednesday. He said the Hotel Do-De suffered extreme fire and water damage and the Garmin Theatre, which is adjacent to the hotel, suffered fire damage on the top floor and water damage on the bottom floor.
Dann stood in front of his charred building, much of the area cordoned off with red police tape, speaking quietly with friends.
"We're just stunned," he said. "We don't really know which way to go next."
The fire started around 12:30 a.m. Sunday and was not contained until around 6 a.m. Three firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation and no patrons of the bar or tenants of the building were harmed.
