Detour to Be in Place for Bridge Work in Lemont

A bridge preservation project on Elmwood Street in Lemont will require a detour for drivers looking to connect between East College Avenue and Pike Street for about a month and a half, according to PennDOT.

Work is set to begin Thursday on the bridge, which spans Spring Creek and is located between Gas Light Circle and Pike Street. The bridge will be closed and drivers will be detoured onto Pike Street and College Avenue/Route 26. The detour will remain in effect until repairs are completed, which according to PennDOT is anticipated to be at the end of August.

The project, which will remove the bridge from the county's poor-condition list, will involve milling the existing asphalt overlay, a new concrete deck and barrier, paving, guide rail installation and pavement marking.

Constructed in 1959, the bridge is 57-feet long and is traveled by about 3,300 vehicles a day.

HRI, Inc., of State College, is the contractor on the $2.2 million project.
