Discovery Space Organizers Plan for New Year's Event

on December 14, 2010 3:24 PM

The public will get an initial look inside the planned Discovery Space of Central Pennsylvania on New Year's Eve, museum organizers said Monday.

Appearing before State College Borough Council, museum Executive Director Art Heim said the space, 112 W. Foster Ave., will be open from 3 to 5 p.m. Dec. 31, in conjunction with First Night State College.

At that point, the 4,200-square-foot space is expected to have been gutted, Heim said. Organizers are preparing it to house a variety of youth-oriented science exhibits when it hosts a grand opening, likely on Children and Youth Day of the 2011 Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, he said. (Children and Youth Day is slated for July 13.)

"You won't see much" on Dec. 31, Heim said, "but it'll be an opportunity to see the building."

Also that day, the Discovery Space facility will host several exhibits from the Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation, which is a branch of the Smithsonian, museum board Chairwoman Marty Starling said.

"This has been a long time coming, I know," Starling said. She has been working on the nonprofit museum plans for some five years.

Starling said the group has established a memorandum of understanding with Penn State, which is expected to help guide the museum via a formal partnership.

Once it opens officially, daily admission prices for the Discovery Space are expected to be in the range of $5 to $6. Membership packages that offer unlimited admission also will be available, Starling said.
