District Statement on Mextorf: 'Board's Inquiry Is Continuing'

on December 02, 2010 6:07 AM

The State College Area School District released a formal statement late Wednesday concerning the DUI charge filed against Superintendent Richard J. Mextorf.

The statement, sent to the news media at 8:40 p.m., came from district spokeswoman Julie Miller. It arrived several hours after state police in Lamar confirmed that Mextorf was involved in a reported driving-under-the-influence incident Nov. 18 in Clinton County.

Here's the full text of the district's statement:

"On Nov. 19, 2010, Dr. Richard Mextorf, Superintendent of State College Area School District, informed the Board of School Directors that he had been cited for a DUI incident on Nov. 18.

"Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2010, the district received a copy of a public information release report issued by the Pennsylvania State Police. It confirms Dr. Mextorf's original report to the board. No additional information is available at this time.

"The board's inquiry is continuing. We anticipate that a criminal complaint could be filed shortly; the board cannot complete its investigation until verified details of the incident are available. This remains a personnel issue, and privacy rights shall be respected.

"The good work of the State College Area School District continues. We appreciate the community's tolerance and patience. Further comment will be provided as appropriate."

According to the initial police report, a state trooper stopped Mextorf at 7:58 a.m. Nov. 18 on state Route 64 in Porter Township, Clinton County. The trooper noticed "an odor of an alcoholic beverage" coming from the vehicle Mextorf was driving, a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee, according to the report.

Mextorf has been charged with DUI and "related traffic offenses," the report notes, though details of the related offenses were not immediately available Wednesday.

On Wednesday afternoon, Mextorf released a statement to the news media, saying that he is "embarrassed and ashamed" and intends "to be accountable for my actions."
